How do you see your world?
Several of my colleagues love to play with deep shadows in their photography. I adore their work. Yet, in my own images I rarely have inky dark areas. Maybe it comes from living in Georgia surrounded by tall trees that produce dappled shade or brilliantly lit areas and heavy shade. You have to see in the shadows.
As I was testing some new tools, I pulled out some difficult photos. Here is one processed for varying amounts of light in the shadows. Which version do you prefer?

Maybe the stark contrasts work better in black and white.

I think I like my shadow deep, but bot too deep. But I do like the drama of the second photo.
