Photos at Dawn

The city at dawn

An early appointment got us on the road well before sunrise. Even before the heavy go-to-work traffic clogged the streets. This was not a photo trip, no big camera along, but I did snap a few scenes with my iPhone.

The lightening sky confused the camera, and this shot was rather underexposed.

With a normal camera shooting raw that is not too serious. The iPhone, however, saves photos in HEIC format. That is indeed very compact. The original is just 920 kB, while this reduced-size JPG is a full megabyte.

When lightening up the image in post-processing the downside of the high efficiency encoding becomes all too apparent. The resolution in the shadows is severely reduced.

With a bit of artistic manipulation my photos still convey the feeling of the city at dawn.

A couple of hours later the iPhone camera really surprised me.

That sun glint was blinding to the eye, yet the camera handled it rather nicely.

Please excuse the reflections in the car windows. As I said, these were just snapshots. Even in the light traffic I wasn’t about to step out of the car for the photos.
