Studio Visit

Taking a peek into the Cafe Art studio

There really is such a thing as my cafe art studio, however, it is just a folder on my laptop where “cafe art” is in progress of being made. This “visit” is occasioned by the release of the latest iteration of FotoSketcher. Version 3.90 was recently released, and it add an additional photo manipulation tool, Painting 11. Over in my Toolshed I posted about this release and used two images to illustrate the new tool. Here they are:

So why would I repeat these images here? Well, it tells a little about how I like to make “cafe art”. For painting effects, I like the impressionist approach, with bold brushstrokes reducing the details to just hints. I like more detail in the main subject and to achieve that I usually make two, sometimes three, “paintings” with varying amount of detail. I then combine portions of these images for my final “work”. Here is my cafe art version of this “Sculpture”:

At times I also use portions of the original photo to bring out more detail. Here are two such images. The first uses just “hints” from the photo. The second shows the main subject, a young dancer, in full photographic detail with the rest of the image just a dreamy painting.

Enough of my secrets for today.

  1. Oh,I’m going to be a real kill-joy here. I can admire the skill here … but I prefer a photo to remain a photo!

    1. Thank you, Margaret. I too appreciate the look, feel, and style of photography. A photograph takes the viewer to the subject. But sometimes that is not what I want to do and the more abstract ways of drawing and painting can achieve that. No joy is killed.
